John Gowans read out the following message from Walter Ridley, Former Executive Producer at EMI:

"As Executive Producer at EMI I have directed the recordings of many famous Salvation Army Bands, recorded on the Regal Zonophone label.

In November 1964 I was asked to make a recording of a guitar and singing group of the Salvation Army who had appeared on BBC TV on a programme presented by Cliff Michelmore. We met at the famous Abbey Road Studios to make the first demo disc entitled 'Open Secret'. It was released and shot immediately into the charts.

From that moment we had a great professional relationship with the group that was to become named 'The Joystrings'. Their enormous appeal on television and their music, which was so natural it couldn't be otherwise, as they developed their musicianship and song writing.

I still think of them as the Army ambassadors, Joy, their leader, Sylvia, Pauline, Peter, Bill and Wycliffe, with great affection."
